How to transfer a domain to WebX

A domain transfer moves the registration itself — who the registrar of record is — rather than just where it points. It's a different thing from pointing a domain at a new host, which you can do without transferring anything (see our guide on pointing a domain to WebX).

• The domain must be at least 60 days past its last registration or transfer.
• It needs to be unlocked at the current registrar.
• WHOIS privacy, if it's on, usually needs to be turned off just long enough to confirm the registrant's email address.

At your current registrar (not WebX):

• Sign in and find the domain's management or settings page.
• Turn off the transfer lock — registrars usually call this "Transfer Lock" or "Registrar Lock".
• Request the EPP code (also called an authorisation code or auth code). Most registrars email it to you or show it directly on the domain's page.

Keep this code somewhere safe — you'll need it in the next step, and it typically only stays valid for a short window.

Once you have the code:

• Go to the domain transfer page in the client portal and enter the domain name and its EPP code.
• We check the domain's eligibility and show you the total cost before you pay — a transfer is billed as a one-year renewal, added on top of whatever term is left.
• Complete payment to submit the transfer request.

After you submit the request, an approval email goes to the domain's registrant address — either from us or from the current registrar, depending on the registry. Confirming it is what actually authorises the move; without it, the transfer won't complete even if you've already paid.

If you don't see the email within a day, check your spam folder, and make sure WHOIS privacy wasn't hiding an out-of-date address.

Most transfers complete within five to seven days once approved, which is the standard window most registries use to let the losing registrar object if something looks wrong. You keep full control of the domain the entire time, and it keeps resolving normally — a transfer doesn't take a site offline.

A transfer also adds a full year on top of whatever registration time you already have left — you never lose time you've already paid for.
